Welcome back to another entry; this week, we laud the benefits of focusing intensely on a singular goal over spreading your resources over multiple aims, and we learn of numerous practical concepts that will allow you to get more done in less time. In other words, read on to learn how to become a productive powerhouse.

Before you begin reading, the below requires a lifestyle/perception shift; for example, if you are someone who is not inclined to engage in a confrontational discussion to forward your aims, then you need to return to your core and determine how badly do you want to achieve your goals? Because the road before you is lined with those who would prefer you to stay where you are. With that said, let us begin.

What is Deep Work to You?

Firstly, we need to define our goals because deep work is different for everyone. Is it the number of words, sales, images edited, phone calls? Or is it the quality of the work you have completed? Whatever it is, you must define these before beginning a work session. Once you have determined your goal remember this, intensity defeats extensity every time; this means that it is better for you to delve deeper into a task than scratch the surface of multiple projects; doing so will make you more anxious and less in control of your work and life. It is always better to focus intensely on a singular task, complete it, then move on to the next; you will remain in control of your work and yourself.

Build

Assuming you experience difficulties developing an intense focus on a singular task, there are multiple causes of this, most likely of which are distractions.

The "Do not disturb' function on both your phone and your computer must become the most commonly used function; the temporary gratification you receive while scrolling is not worth the delay in your work's timeline; it never is; keep this in the back of your mind; further, remember that whenever you find yourself scrolling when you should be working chide yourself for your desire has overpowered you.

To build and develop an intense focus, begin by setting a 15-minute timer on your phone, play a game with yourself, and then assess the quantity and quality of work you produce in that time. The short time will motivate you to perform.

Eventually, you will find that you have remained focused for multiple 15-minute timers; this calls for an increase in the timer's duration. I use a 25 minute three times before I take a break; other times, I can focus over three hours before needing a break.

Focus is different for us all and will never remain constant. Be kind with yourself, and don't be upset if you can not focus for longer than 30 minutes; that is not important for the time being. What is essential is your desire to focus for more extended periods. Continue to work at this, and your focus will intensify and improve over time.

An Important Hack

The following hack has alleviated a lot of stress in my life, and it is this: if you are faced with a task that will take under two minutes to complete, DO IT NOW.

The trash can is full; take it outside to the big bin, an email from your manager asking for some figures? Send it right now. Some clothes need to be put away? Do it now.

If you develop this and transform it into a habit, you will become a machine; you will experience less stress, less anxiety, and feel in control of your life and surroundings. Make this into a habit today.

Block it

The final consideration is time blocking. To learn more about this effective tool, please read this entry.

Time blocking is the act of setting aside time in the day where you focus on a single task, simple. Adequate time blocking, however, requires prioritization, meaning you must sit with yourself at the opening of each day and prioritise your tasks, select a maximum of three; the less, the better, as they say: "less is more". Select your three most pressing tasks and then decide what part of the day is for that task, my advice for this part is to tackle the most challenging thing immediately; this will give you the required momentum to tackle the rest of the day.

Ultimate

You will never reach the pinnacle of success if you neglect to take care of yourself; while on this journey, remember to take the time to nothing at least once a day. There is no use in firing all cylinders and then blowing your head gasket before you reap the fruits of your efforts. Take it easy at least once a day; you must.
